Lisa Ford is Professor of Modern British Imperial History at George Washington University. She is the prize-winning author and co-author of several books: Inquiring into Empire (Cambridge, 2025), The King’s Peace (Harvard, 2021), Rage for Order (Havard, 2016) and Settler Sovereignty (Harvard, 2010).
In this paper, Professor Ford will discuss the varied uses of martial law in Britain’s empire from the1770s. To understand its role in British Imperial Governance, she will argue that we need to look both at the details and contestations of its use to quell rebellions in new and old colonies as well as its utility in projecting order over uncertain subjects and ungovernable places on the fringes of empire.
